HazPac for Hazardous Waste

The Hazardous Waste Compactor

The RotoPac HazPac hazardous Waste Compactor was designed to accommodate the compaction of certain types of solid hazardous waste materials. This compactor has a small footprint, high compaction, ease of use and its unique ability to compact waste into bulk bags or into hazardous waste boxes makes this hazardous waste compactor ideal for compacting hazardous waste for transporting.

Packing groups are used for the purpose of determining the degree of protective packaging required for dangerous goods during transportation. Solid hazardous waste falls into one of three packing groups (I, II and III) which indicate the degree of danger presented by the material as great, medium or minor, respectively. The Department of Transportation has listed many such hazardous materials on their website www.gpoaccess.gov/ecfr.

 Features:

The RotoPac HazPac compactor handles the compaction of hazardous waste of all three groups into either bulk bags or waste boxes. The RotoPac HazPac is configured somewhat differently for handling each type of container.

The advantage of compacting the hazardous material into either bags or tri-wall boxes is obvious in that the RotoPac HazPac puts 6 times the amount of waste in each container when compared to contents without mechanical compaction. However, RotoPac HazPac is customized differently for different containers.

The modifications to the standard RotoPac to accommodate the bulk bag are minor if a bag is used that is greater in both width and depth than 41 inches. See the picture below where an empty bulk bag is placed in the RotoPac. When compacting the bag shield, the drum descends into the bag where the bag shield protects the bag from bursting under the pressure from the drum’s compacting. The bag can be placed on a pallet or sit on the floor. In either case the filled bag is removed by a forklift.

Whether you use the bags or the boxes, your savings can exceed $2,000 per month because of the high compaction this hazardous waste compactor generates. Also, because of the small footprint RotoPac HazPac it can be placed close to the source hazardous material generation, saving travel time and increasing efficiency. RotoPac BlastPac can be modified to meet the specifications of the RotoPac HazPac for hazardous environments.

Ideal areas for RotoPac HazPac placement:

  • Large paint shops such as Navy and aerospace firms
  • Chemical plants
  • Battery manufacturers
  • Any facilities with large volumes of type I, II, or III hazardous waste materials

BlastPac Explosion Proof Waste Compactor

BlastPac Explosion Proof Waste Compactor

The explosion proof waste compactor RotoPac BlastPac was designed to operate safely in explosive environments where there is a presence of flammable gases or vapors such as varied non-flammable dust to lessen hazardous environments. This explosion proof waste compactor is ideal for different types of hazardous, explosive environment location as delineated by the NEC (National Electric Code).

Two Models Based on Class Designations:

RotoPac BlastPac – Hazardous Waste Compactor for Explosive Environment

According to the NEC (National Electric Code) there are different types of hazardous locations. The first type of hazard is one which is created by the presence of flammable gases or vapors in the air, such as natural gas or gasoline vapor. When these materials are found in the atmosphere, a potential for explosion exists, which could be ignited if an electrical or other source of ignition is present. This is referred to as a Class I type of hazard. So a Class I hazardous location is one in which flammable gases or vapors may be present in the air in sufficient quantities to be explosive or ignitable.

Some typical locations:

  • Petroleum refineries, and gasoline storage and dispensing areas
  • Dry cleaning plants where vapors from cleaning fluids can be present
  • Spray finishing areas
  • Aircraft hangars and fuel servicing areas
  • Utility gas plants, and operations involving storage and handling of liquefied petroleum gas or natural gas
  • All of these hazardous or explosive environment locations require Class I hazardous equipment

Materials to be compacted may contain these gases or vapors on them:

  • Acetylenes
  • Hydrogen
  • Ether
  • Hydrocarbons, fuels, solvents

So rags, paper, articles of clothing, boxes, wrapping etc that have been exposed to these materials would be efficiently and safely compacted in a Class I, Division II designed RotoPac BlastPac™. The Division II designation is most common and it pertains to the gases that are not normally present in an explosive concentration (but may accidently exist).

The RotoPac BlastPac Class I Explosive Environment Compactor adds these hazard -proof critical components to the standard RotoPac.

Class I, Division II additional items:

1. Electric motor
2. Hydraulic panel
3. Electrical panel
4. Switches that are sealed with conduit
5. Aluminum explosion proof push button station without lights
6. Hard pipe conduit
7. This may have to have a special inspection at installed location.
8. Control panels are mounted separately on the outside of the RotoPac BlastPac because of their size

RotoPac BlastPac – Class II

The second type of hazard listed by the NEC is any area made hazardous by the presence of combustible dust.  These areas are referred to in the Code as “Class II locations.”  Finely pulverized material, suspended in the atmosphere, can cause as powerful an explosion as one occurring at a petroleum refinery.

Some Typical Class II locations:

  • Grain elevators
  • Flour and feed mills
  • Plants that manufacture, use or store magnesium or aluminum powders
  • Produces of plastics, medicines and fireworks
  • Producers of starch or candies
  • Spice-grinding plants, sugar plants and cocoa plants
  • Coal preparation plants and other carbon handling or processing areas

Materials to be compacted may contain these dusts:

  • Metal dusts (conductive and explosive)
  • Carbon Dusts (some are conductive; all are explosive)
  • Flour, starch, grain, combustible plastic (not likely to be explosive)

Examples of the materials to be compacted: paper bags (50 pound bag is typical), plastic bags, paper, various types of plastic, masking tape, etc.

For this designation the RotoPac BlastPac Class II adds these components to the standard RotoPac:

Class II, Division II additional items:

1. Explosion Proof Lights, Push buttons and Emergency Stop
2. Hydraulic valves and components in E-Proof NEMA 4 box
3. Explosion proof 5 hp motor
4. Electrical panel enclosed in a NEMA 4 box
5. Explosion cord grips for holding wires
6. Explosion Proof Isolator Switch

NEMA 4 box defined: Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment; to provide a degree of protection against falling dirt, rain, sleet, snow, windblown dust, splashing water, and hose-directed water; and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.

SeaPac Marine Waste Compactor

Oil rigs in the tropics present an extreme environment for equipment. The RotoPac SeaPac Marine Trash Compactor is built to withstand these challenging conditions for oil rigs and for lesser environments, such as barges and ships, where less costly materials and components are used. Safety, ease of use and the environmental impact are design considerations in all KenBay marine waste compactor equipment and supplies. All marine equipment is made to comply with the appropriate standards.

Features:

There are a number of standards that exist worldwide to define the types and applicability of enclosures.  In the United States those of the National Electrical Manufactures Association (NEMA) are the most prevalent; worldwide the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards are most prevalent.  The RotoPac SeaPac complies with both standards.

For the NEMA rating the RotoPac SeaPac marine trash compactor is NEMA 4X.  NEMA 4X is defined as intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against corrosion, windblown dust and rain, splashing water, hose directed water and damage from ice formation.

The IEC uses a two-digit classification. The first digit defines the protection against ingress of solid foreign objects. The highest degree is 6.  The RotoPac SeaPac meets that classification which is referred to as “Dust Tight.”  The second digit defines the protection it provides against ingress of liquids with a range from 0 to 8.  The RotoPac SeaPac rating of 7 indicates that it is rated for temporary “immersion in water.”  Since it isn’t necessary to have the motor rated at 8 (for “continuous immersion in water”)  the RotoPac SeaPac marine trash compactor is built to the highest standards required for an IEC rating of IP67.

Some typical locations for this marine trash compactor are:

  • Housing Platforms for the Oil Industry
