Sustainability and KenBay: The Zero Landfill Initiative
By KenBay on Jun 25, 2021 4:50:08 AM
What Is the Zero Landfill Initiative?
The Zero Landfill Initiative is a comprehensive attempt by local and international nonprofit organizations to turn landfill waste materials into sustainable energy. This initiative is designed to help facilitate businesses, communities, and international enterprises to reclaim landfill space and redirect these areas toward creating more sustainable work and living spaces. Resource waste material recovery is modeled on the worldwide effort to provide the highest standard of living for countries and communities grappling with their volume of waste production and landfill concerns.
For decades, Europe and other densely populated areas have been concerned that future generations won’t have the same access to living space due to increased landfill volume. Thus, they’ve moved decidedly toward waste-to-energy approaches. Increasingly, North America has signed onto the Zero Landfill Initiative as it takes a pro-future assessment of growing concerns for its land/space concerns.
Industrial waste disposal products deposited into landfills have ceased to affect the population at large positively. Repurposing what has heretofore been considered industrial waste either through recycling or reclaiming the inherent energy in most products supports a sustainable future.
Creating such a future involves a forward-thinking initiative. Occasionally, a larger investment by the business community is necessary to curb industrial waste. But KenBay believes it can provide a more cost-effective means to achieve the waste-to-energy goal in the Zero Landfill Initiative using its unique industrial rotary trash compactor, the RotoPac.
How KenBay Can Help
Achieving complete zero-landfill status involves redesigning the cycle of waste disposal such that waste materials are being recycled rather than being sent to landfills. The KenBay RotoPac is an effective machine for efficiently capturing, compacting, and transporting various types of waste to waste-to-energy facilities and various recyclers of solid waste. For example, the RotoPac is being used to break up large pieces of Styrofoam and place them into plastic bags for shipping. It is necessary to significantly reduce the shipping costs to make the recycling of Styrofoam cost-effective.
For another RotoPac client, industrial hazardous waste from its aircraft paint shop is compacted into hazardous waste-rated tri-wall boxes for cost-effective shipping to a Waste To Energy (WtE) firm. The RotoPac is being used extensively for compacting cardboard and plastics for various local recycling companies, and KenBay continually reassesses and improves upon its industrial trash compactor waste removal model.
A RotoPac is compacting all non-hazardous waste into biodegradable bags for those companies still progressing toward complete zero-landfill, which, when filled, generally weigh over 600 lbs and form into a one-yard cube. The bags do not degrade when stored but will degrade within six months in a landfill.
Converting Waste into Energy
Did you know that most of the waste stream from industrial waste that is not being recycled can be made into energy? To do so, companies must transport that waste material to a waste-to-energy facility. Using an industrial trash compactor like the KenBay RotoPac can compact waste materials into stackable polyethylene bags. This allows the end-user to load up to 30,000 lbs into a conventional trailer, thereby reducing transportation costs.
KenBay adds enormous value to your company’s zero waste landfill initiatives. The KenBay Rotopac industrial waste compactor tightly compacts waste materials into 4’ cubed bags, enabling waste haulers to maximize the amount to be trucked to recycling centers, waste-to-energy facilities, or the incinerator. These stackable bags are superior to transporting roll-offs and receiver cans, which contain considerable wasted space. By placing a RotoPac at the source of the waste (on the facility floor), the unique rotary arm compactor crushes your trash six to eight times before shipping it to an industrial waste disposal site.
Other Benefits
Other benefits to using the KenBay Rotary Industrial Compactor include improved safety compliance by minimizing the handling of waste materials in any facility; available biodegradable bags provide a more environmentally friendly approach to the Zero Landfill Initiative; and the small footprint (4’ x 5’) of the RotoPac allows for strategic placement on a plant or facility floor, optimizing floor space for greater production value.
