An effective way to reduce labor costs in waste removal is by integrating waste compaction into the production process. Why Companies Should Integrate Waste Removal with Production
Small Plastic Bags
A client imports thousands of small items daily in small plastic bags (2”x3” up to 6”x8”) to be made into consumer products through pad printing. They were bagged to protect the items in shipment that were then to have 2-D images transferred onto 3-D final products. The problems these bags presented were 1) removing the content from them is very labor intensive and 2) they presented a removal problem. Without compaction, a metric cube of bags weighs on average approximately 50 lbs.
The client developed equipment that removed the content of the plastic bags then deposited the bags into a bulk bag to be recycled. This presented a removal problem with the cost of transporting them to the recycler. So they selected a customized KenBay RotoPac compactor to integrate waste removal. With mild heat they were able to increase the weight of metric cubes of filled plastic bags from 50 lbs to 500 lbs when compacted. By integrating the waste removal into the production process they were able to enhance their total production with the 1st step of unpacking the content eliminating the labor of as many as 15 persons and the 2nd step by reducing labor and hauling costs by over 50%.
Cardboard Boxes
A number of our clients have KenBay RotoPac waste compactors strategically placed in their production lines where components are received and removed from cardboard boxes. In this way the cardboard boxes are handled only once i.e., the cardboard boxes are put into the compactor when the content is removed. The RotoPac compacts the cardboard (on average 6 times) into a large plastic bag forming a one metric cube when filled. Since it weighs over 500 lbs. the cube is removed with a forklift and placed in a covered trailer, generally owned by a recycling company.
A hamburger producing company was receiving meat in cardboard boxes into their production area. The meat is manually removed and thrown into a meat grinder. When the box is emptied he/she would toss it into a KenBay stainless steel RotoPac to be compacted into a large plastic bag. The RotoPac is in a meat processing area so it, like all the other machines, is shut down during the 3rd shift so they can all be washed down. When the bags are filled they are lifted out of the RotoPac, then sealed with duct tape and removed to a conveyance for transport to a recycling facility. By having a compactor with a small footprint (4’x5’) in the production line no extra labor is required for removal of the waste cardboard.
50 lbs. Bags
50 lbs. bags are extensively used in the bakery, ingredient, feed and other industries for transporting product from the producer to the company making final product with their content. Disposing of them in the production process as they are emptied is being done by dropping them into a chute, by conveyer or manually thrown into a compactor located near where the bags are emptied. The bags are never handled by anyone beside the person emptying them.
